Ice grain size and the rheology of the martian polar deposits

چکیده
The history and dynamics of the martian polar deposits (MPD), the largest known water reservoirs on Mars, are of great interest, but estimates of ice grain size are required before detailed modeling can be performed. We clarify the microphysical processes that may control grain size in the MPD. If the MPD are ∼2% dust by mass, the maximum ice grain size is ∼1 mm due to grain boundary pinning by silicate microparticles. Relatively dusty layers in the MPD will have smaller grain sizes. If MPD ice has a very low impurity content and has experienced a significant amount of strain, grains may reach a steady state size of ∼1.5 to 3 mm due to dynamic recrystallization, wherein a steady state grain size is maintained due to the balance of grain growth and destruction during flow. If the near-bed ice in the MPD is warmed close to its melting point and has been extensively sheared, grain sizes at its base may be between 10 and 40 mm, by analogy with warm, dirty, near-bed ice in terrestrial ice sheets. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The Role of Eolian Processes in Forming Surface Featuresof the Martian Polar Layered Deposits
The major topographic features of the martian polar layered deposits include the conspicuous spiral troughs, subtle undulations, broad reentrants (chasma), steep, arcuate scarps, and dune fields. A prominent role for eolian processes in the formation of all of these features is proposed. Strong katabatic winds occur on the north polar cap, producing widespread frost streaks. These cold drainage...
متن کاملCompact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars observations of northern Martian latitudes in summer
[1] This paper brings together initial results obtained of the high northern latitudes in Mars years 28 and 29, between October 2006 and October 2008. These measurements confirm many previous models and shed new light on the nature of polar surface materials, particularly in intermediate-albedo units of the polar layered deposits, many of which are found to be ice-rich. We identify hydrated non...
متن کاملOnset of convection in the icy Galilean satellites: Influence of rheology
[1] Ice I exhibits a complex rheology at temperature and pressure conditions appropriate for the interiors of the ice I shells of Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. We use numerical methods and existing parameterizations of the critical Rayleigh number to determine the conditions required to trigger convection in an ice I shell with each of the stress-, temperatureand grain size–dependent rheologi...
متن کاملDeep Radar Sounding of Martian Polar Deposits: Radiative Transfer Models
Introduction: Investigation of the internal structure of martian polar caps, being a challenging task during past decades [1], is now going to be solved with the ground penetrating radar (GPR) instruments, both orbital and landed. In the present report the propagation of ultra wide band (UWB) chirp pulse in martian polar ice caps is investigated. The specific nature of the problem is that rathe...
متن کاملGlacial Flow Modeling of the Martian North Polar Layered Deposits
Introduction: Recent observations of the Martian North Polar Layered Deposits (NPLD) suggest that glacial flow may govern its large-scale evolution [1]. There are two basic glaciological questions of climatological importance: (1) How fast is the NPLD presently flowing? (2) And does the NPLD experience " ice ages " : i.e., episodes of glacial advance and retreat at other orbital epochs? To addr...
